A new way to connect your devices – DLNA

The Digital Living Network Alliance, or DLNA, was started in 2003, and it is revolutionizing the way we experience technology. The organization’s mission is to bridge the compatibility gap between different formats and fix connectivity issues between different hardware infrastructures, allowing end users to enjoy media streaming and file sharing between different devices. Think of it as the modern Bluetooth for modern devices: ALL SORTS of modern devices. The grassroots movement of just a few companies now includes giants like IBM, Sony, Toshiba, Cisco, Comcast, Intel, and more.

USABILITY

Unite your cell phone, PDA, TV, PC, stereo, printer, fax machine, digital camera, video recorder, router and other devices under your already-existing network, at home or in the workplace! Using DLNA, you can now share your iTunes library with your kitchen stereo, or you can print out an email attachment from your PDA through your printer, bypassing the PC as the “mediator” for your data. Before, showing a corporate PowerPoint required you to burn the .ppt file from your office computer on a CD, or transfer it to a flash drive so you could plug it into a projector or a laptop in the conference room; with DLNA, all of your devices are sharing your existing network – doesn’t matter if its wired or wireless – and working together to make your day more efficient.

According to the Executive Vice President of Comcast, Tony Werner:

“We’re working to continually innovate our products and services to offer consumers unparalleled choice and control for a differentiated entertainment experience. The new DLNA guidelines and certification will support that goal by giving our customers the ability to enjoy content when and how they want on a range of devices.”

CONFIGURATION

In order to make a new electronic device compatible with other DLNA-certified units, the manufacturer has to follow very specific guidelines established by the Alliance. Adjustments and revisions are continuously made to this list of requirements to expand the support of various products. If you’re an end-user, the configuration of a DLNA-certified device is simple: just hook it up to your home or office network, and you’re good to go. Data transfer speeds vary depending on which device you’re using; for instance, Ethernet-enabled playback devices can seamlessly let you watch an HD movie in 1080P with no problems.

And that’s how it works.

DEVICE CLASSES

DLNA Certified Devices are clustered into three groups: home network devices, mobile handheld devices, and home infrastructure devices.

HOME NETWORK DEVICES

Digital Media Servers (DMS)
DMS hold content that can be played of Digital Media Players, or DMPs, as well as Digital Media Renderers, or DMRs.
Example: your home PC

Digital Media Players (DMP)
DMP can render and play back content stored on DMS.
Example: your kitchen TV, or the living room stereo.

Digital Media Controllers (DMC)
DMCs look for content on the DMS and play it on DMRs.
Example: your WiFi digital camera, Internet tablet, or PDA.

Digital Media Renderers (DMR)
Like a DMP for the DMS, except for the DMC: it plays content from Digital Media Controllers.
Example: remote media speakers, AV receivers.

Digital Media Printer (DMP)
Pretty self-explanatory: will print just about anything and everything on your DLNA network. No example necessary.

HOME INFRASTRUCTURE DEVICES

Mobile Network Connectivity Function (M-NCF)
These devices provide a bridge between mobile handheld device network connectivity and home network connectivity.

Media Interoperability Unit (MIU)
These devices provide content transformation between required media formats for home network and mobile handheld devices.

MOBILE HANDHELD DEVICES

Mobile Digital Media Server, Player and Controller (M-DMS, M-DMP, M-DMC)
Everything that a conventional DMS, DMP, or DMC can do, except in handheld form. Cell phones and PDAs can be a M-DMS, M-DMP or a M-DMC.

Mobile Digital Media Uploader (M-DMU)
DLNA-certified cameras, music players, video recorders, and other handheld devices that can send files and other media to your DMC or DMR, like a TV or a DVR, are uploaders.

Mobile Digital Media Downloader (M-DMD)
Used for locating, downloading and storing data from DLNA-certified devices.
Examples: cell phones and MP3 players.

The idea behind the DLNA is to allow your devices to communicate with each other quickly, with minimum fuss. Right now, over 5,000 devices developed by 245 companies are DLNA-compliant, and millions of people have experienced the advancement already. Look for the official green seal when buying your next device to see if it’s supported by other DLNA devices.

We should see the availability of even more DLNA compatible devices appearing in the markets over the next couple of years.

The incredible stats surrounding the phenomenon which is Avatar , the most recent James Cameron movie, ought to be well known to all of us by now. The picture began breaking records practically from the first day of release, with $27 million taken on its starting day and $77 by the conclusion of its starting weekend at the box office in the us. The film did equally well worldwide, taking more than $20 million in France and Russia during the starting weekend. Moreover it made more than $10 million in numerous other locations like Germany and the UK.

The motion picture didn’t stop there and following this extraordinary start it grew even larger with massive amounts taken at box offices over the world. I’m afraid therefore if you haven’t witnessed the picture yet then you would seem to be in the minority.

Avatar additionally did fairly very well with regards to critical acclaim and award nominations. The movie ended up getting 3 Academy Awards from the potential 9 it was nominated for – a notable haul – so it was not just the general population that appreciated the film, but in addition the industry itself.

Quickly to follow something that develops this degree of public fascination is naturally plenty of branded products, and Avatar was no exception. Matel, the toy giants, were swift to release a selection of Avatar based Action Figures which were released in December 2009. As with the film itself, the figurines were built with a small spin themselves, utilizing an i-Tag unique to each that permitted you to do things in an on the internet world with it. McDonald’s also released a variety of action figures in their Happy Meals.

With Avatar becoming history, what’s next? Well, Cameron always had plans for a sequel – 2 in fact.

The very first sequel is starting to achieve some media coverage, although it seems like both Cameron and producer Jon Landau will be working for a short time overseeing the production of further material to accompany the different unique Blu-Ray editions of the movie which are still to come. Ultimately a 2-hour ‘making of’ will feature among other treats. The standard Avatar motion picture was launched on Blu-Ray on 22nd April, enabling you to get another fix prior to details of the sequels become more settled.

I’m afraid the latest quotes from Landau suggest we could have to hold out a while yet for the first sequel. Landau expressed that whatever movie Cameron creates it will not get done in six months. So maybe make good use of the current motion picture on Blu-Ray for a while yet. However, the storyline from the first flick left loads of options to follow it up, so here’s awaiting what they think of next.

TVs have come a long way since I was young, I used to watch our huge CRT TV in the front room and thought that was good, even though the back stuck out about 2 feet! Then the plasma TV came onto the market and suddenly you had a TV you could hang on the wall, that caused quite a stir. Finally LCD TVs came out and started to compete with the plasma ones, and HDTV came onto the scene recently too, so where are we going now?

A recent development has been the use of LEDs for the backlighting of an LCD TV, previously they used CCFLs (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) which are bulky compared to LEDs. There are two versions you can get, one where the LEDs are at the edge and the light is guided into the middle, or the better version where the LEDs are all across the back of the screen, either way you get a super slim screen compared to the CCFL versions.

Just starting to emerge now are the 3DTVs, although that technology is still in its infancy so the reaction has not been that good at the moment. The concept of 3D television is excellent, and I have seen firsthand how powerful 3D movies can be, but at the moment you have to wear funny glasses that make it less usable. The glasses currently on the market have to flicker constantly to give each of your eyes a different image, which can be annoying and disorienting, and I have seen a report which says the 3D effect does not work if you sit more than a few feet away from the screen.

Remember these are the first generation of 3DTVs though, so the people who like to have the newest toys will buy these models, then the rest of us will wait for them to improve the technology and buy the later versions of them. There are one or two companies working on commercial applications of 3D viewing without having to wear glasses, so hopefully that will filter down into our TVs soon.

OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) are something to watch out for, but at the moment they are stuck with screens no bigger than about 13 inches in size. They are still trying to get round the problems of creating larger screens with this technology, but if they do crack it then you can expect to have a TV hanging on the wall which is mere millimeters thick! So the future of TV is certainly interesting, I can’t wait to see what things will be like in 5 years time…

If you want a huge 55 inch LCD TV while you wait for 3D TV to take off, then consider the UN55B6000 which is really popular at the moment.

If you are in the market for a new TV now then there is some new technology starting to emerge which you need to consider, and the sizes are still increasing too, both those things make it harder than ever to choose which model you should go for. One good thing I have noticed is that the plasma TV is a dying breed, the war between that and LCD is finally over, and LCD looks like it is the clear winner. You will see some plasma TVs still on the market, but LCD is firmly in control now so you need to think long and hard before you go against the popular opinion and get a plasma.

Below you will find two TV technologies you need to think about when you go shopping again:

3D TV is coming out: That’s right, 3D televisions are already on the market, and more will surely come flooding out now that others have made the tentative first steps, but are they any good? The big problem with anything 3D at the moment is the glasses that you have to wear if you want to experience it. The current ones use ‘active shutter’ technology which means each lens has a shutter on it that opens and closes faster than you can notice, so each eye receives a slightly different image. I think they are cumbersome, and wearing glasses ruins the experience, I wouldn’t mind wearing them to watch the odd 3D film, but watching normal TV in them? No thanks.

So I think it is best to wait for a few years before you get your first 3D TV, that way we can wait for the technology to move forward and see if they find a way to get rid of the glasses, or if we are stuck with them. Another good thing about waiting is that it gives them time to work out any bugs that emerge with this batch of TVs, and it gives the price time to go down as more TVs come out to create competition .

LED backlighting is available: Yes the TVs often referred to as LED TVs are out, when in fact they are LCD TVs with LED backlighting. This technology means they have taken the CCFL backlighting that is in every other LCD TV, and is a little bulky, and they have replaced it with ultra small and light LEDs instead. The end result is a TV with ultra slim sides and with its thickest point being just 2 inches, but is it worth paying more for that when LCD TVs are pretty slim already?

I think it is a good step forward, it makes them lighter and thinner, but I wouldn’t pay a massive premium for it like they are charging at the moment while the technology is still new and sparkly. Have a look in a year or so when the hype has died down, and if they are just 10% more than the non-LED range then they are probably worth getting, otherwise I would stick with a normal one.

Another thing you need to think about is the size, if you are stuck with a 32 LCD TV then you might want to consider upgrading to a 42 incher, but the 55 inch TV is too big for a normal family to enjoy comfortably.

<fb:share-button href="http://www.wunderhome.net/2010/05/two-things-to-consider-when-buying-a-new-tv/" type="button_count"></fb:share-button>

Samsung led 3dtvs are changing and improving on themselves. It can be hard as a consumer to know when to invest and when to wait just a little bit longer until something better comes along. The new craze in electronics right now is the introduction of the 3D tv. These 3D tv’s have already gone above and beyond themselves in announcing the creation of the led 3D tv.

With a combination of hardware and software, Samsung 3D TVs are able to convert the 2D content in real time that are translated by the glasses as a 3D image. Samsung is the first and only to offer the 2D to 3D conversion for the 3D TVs. At first glances , Samsung 3D TVs can actually convert 2D content to 3D content (perfect for Astro User) Using innovative real-time 2D-to-3D video converting the Samsung 3D-enabled TVs allow you to watch normal 2D TV in 3D.

With the simple push of a button, you can now watch great 3dtv – including the up-and-coming 2010 World Cup – in 3D! We?ve tested the Panasonic and Samsung 3D TVs as well as sampled the latest Sony Braia 3D sets at this week’s NAB tradeshow and found significant performance differences among brands. Samasung led 3dtv has almost eliminated screen flicker in the latest demo of its upcoming 3D LED TV, while the Sony and Panasonic plasma sets are following in a close second in qualitiy.

Samsung led 3dtvs worldwide have genuinely started to pick up in popularity ever since popular movies have begun to be transformed into three dimensional viewing experiences. There are also a number of networks that have broadcast sporting events in 3D and plan on doing many more in the near future. With the success of these 3D endeavors it makes sense that there would be a market to have this viewing experience useable within your own home. There have been a few different electronics expos that have showcased these televisions and it is evident that this is where the television industry is headed.

An Samasung led 3dtv is a great investment because the LCD panels interior of the television will be backlit by these LED lights rather than the typical fluorescent tubes. Sony is one of those distributors that has a variety of different models coming out using this LED technology. The led 3D tv will do a lot to help save energy while producing quality picture for everyone that is viewing.

Recently more and more manufacturers have started to offer home theater systems with wireless speakers or a wireless speaker kit. From a homeowners standpoint, eliminating long speaker cable runs is certainly a big plus. Multi-channel surround sound is a fairly new phenomenon and as such many older houses are not wired for rear speakers, not to mention 7.1 systems. As such a wireless solution might be the logical conclusion. But how reliable are these wireless speaker kits in a real-world scenario and do these options really eliminate the dreaded cable clutter?

Some wireless speaker kits, such as the LG or Rocketfish allow to connect 2 speakers to a wireless receiver unit. This eliminates the cables from the front to the back. However, still cables need to be run from the receiver to each speaker and as such the amount of cables is just reduced but not eliminated. Another wireless surround sound product from Amphony comes with separate receivers for each speaker which in comparison to the other products does reduce the cable clutter, albeit not eliminate cables completely.

Will the wireless have any effect on performance? Audio quality is a main concern. In picking a wireless system, one should choose a system where (a) the transmission itself does not pick up any noise or degradation in order to maintain the audio quality and (b) the wireless amplifier itself should be a high-quality amplifier with minimal distortion. Also, the size of the wireless speaker amplifier is a consideration as the receiver should be invisible.

In a home theater setting, the sound from all surround speakers should be in sync with the video and each other. Some wireless speaker kits, such as the product from Rocketfish, will introduce a noticeable delay. As such you should look at how much of a delay or latency the wireless will introduce to the signal travelling to the wireless speakers. The product from Amphony introduces a delay of a little less than 1 ms which should be low enough for pretty much any application.

One of the main issues with wireless devices of any sort is interference from other devices. As more and more consumer devices go wireless, the available frequency space becomes more and more limited. Especially the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz bands are exceptionally crowded, due to WiFi hot spots, cell phones with Bluetooth etc. Picking a system that avoids these frequency bands may be the logical choice, such as systems working at 5.8 GHz.

Aside from using a wireless speaker kit in a home theater environment, another useful application for wireless systems is streaming audio between different rooms of the home where wiring would be difficult to install or for outdoor applications. Just imagine being able to set up your speakers in your backyard in a matter of minutes. The possibilities are endless.

So your looking to buy Samsung 3D TV

The new Samsung 3D TVs are delivering the pure thrill of 3D entertainment, connectivity that enhances your life, and visually stunning picture quality. Action leaps off the screen with advanced 3D technology, for a truly immersive viewing experience.

Technology continues to increase at an incredibly quick pace. Every year something new comes out that virtually changes the industry forever. One of the most poular electronics that we have, the Television, improves so fast that is almost impossible to stay on top of the technology. Wasn’t too long ago, we were barely coming out with High Definition Televisions and people weren’t sure if they would completely catch on. Less than a decade later we take it to the next level with 3D tvs.

3D tvs are becoming popular after cinemas have started to exhibit more and more movies using this 3D technology. The 3D technology gives you the sensation that things are in front of each other and that they have the power to fly right out of the screen if they wanted to. There are a few 3D tvs that are being developed right now and that have been showcased at Electronics Shows over the country. Some of these tvs require special 3D glasses and others do not. For the entry level 3D tvs coming out, you can probably expect to have to get special glasses in order to view them at first but expect technology to continue to increase and make it easier for viewing purposes.

These Samsung 3d televisions are picking up popularity after some networks have decided to start showcasing sports in 3D. Watching Samsung 3D TV and movies can still be a little bit distracting on the eyes but great lengths are being taken to make it easier to view and enjoy.

Reporters at Sports New York (SNY) got a sneak peak at 3D TV in action after Comcast Cable gave them a demonstration of the technology they will use at this months Masters golf tournament. Comcast experts delivered 3 units to the test. A passive 3D TV made by LG, an active 3D TV manufactured by Sony, and a 3D capable laptop. Both passive and active solutions call for viewers to use glasses, however with passive 3D, a great deal of the work is done through the TV and the glasses are simple in style. With active 3D, the technologies for most 3D TVs presently being produced, viewers have to utilize more expensive glasses that are fitted with built-in components that help create the 3D effect. For the time being the cost of the passive technology means that makers are focusing on active 3D.

Individuals who desire to take part in the 3D preview during the Masters must fulfill some prerequisites to enjoy the experience. Viewers will need a 3DTV and 3D glasses alongside an HD set top box from Comcast that has High-definition multimedia interface connections. Alternatively, people who have a 3D Computer screen together with a 3D media player and 3D glasses also can take advantage of the 3D feed at masters.com. Folks that fulfill these specifications may also get the exclusive transmission through video-on-demand. Comcast intends to deliver each preceding day’s coverage of the Tournament in 3D as well as a highlights and recap show over the video-on-demand service. To pull of this feat, Comcast will make use of their fiber optic network to send out the massive 3D feed. Comcast has partnered with IBM to help provide the online broadcast. For the lucky few with 3D televisions this years Masters shall be unique for reasons besides Tiger’s come back.

Comcast, the leading provider of Digital Cable TV, Broadband Internet, and Phone service, is the initial large cable tv corporation to enter the 3D TV arena when they launched plans to transmit several live hours of the Masters golf tournament in 3D. The broadcast will also be accessible on the web.

Walk up to a person on the street and ask them, how often they go to the movies? Most will likely say not that often. A custom home theater will change that. Families can and will be drawn together with a home theater.

The custom home theater comes in many forms. Whether it is a big screen T.V. or a front projector and a screen, they are essential parts to the home theater experience. Add a control system and lighting control for the lights and control the almost ceremonious dimming of the lights that occurs in a movie theater to get the right movie atmosphere. Next is a high quality surround system that will let you hear all of the action coming from the movie sound track.

Going to the movie theater is often a family affair. You go out to the movies and the next few days are spent talking about the film. With your custom home theater, you can bring that experience home. Getting your family together will be as easy as starting your very own family movie night. Pop some popcorn, pour drinks and watch your favorite movie together. Imagine not having to be quiet, even being able to pause a movie to allow bathroom breaks or a snack runs. You will never have to miss part of a movie again. Plus you and your family will be drawn together because you will always have something to talk about.

Your neighborhood will be buzzing when they learn about your custom home theater. Invite your friends and they will want to invite their friends. Your kids will want to invite their friends over for movies and video games on the big screen. Your list of friends will grow around a custom home theater.

As you may notice a custom home theater has its perks. You will soon be in the comfort of your own home, the smell of popcorn in the air with friends and family by your side enjoying a movie in your very own home theater.
