With Avatar Now a Household Name, What Sequels Are Likely to Come Our Way and are They Due Any Time Soon?

What Kind Of TVs Will We Have In The Future?

TVs have come a long way since I was young, I used to watch our huge CRT TV in the front room and thought that was good, even though the back stuck out about 2 feet! Then the plasma TV came onto the market and suddenly you had a TV you could hang on the wall, that caused quite a stir. Finally LCD TVs came out and started to compete with the plasma ones, and HDTV came onto the scene recently too, so where are we going now?

A recent development has been the use of LEDs for the backlighting of an LCD TV, previously they used CCFLs (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) which are bulky compared to LEDs. There are two versions you can get, one where the LEDs are at the edge and the light is guided into the middle, or the better version where the LEDs are all across the back of the screen, either way you get a super slim screen compared to the CCFL versions.

Just starting to emerge now are the 3DTVs, although that technology is still in its infancy so the reaction has not been that good at the moment. The concept of 3D television is excellent, and I have seen firsthand how powerful 3D movies can be, but at the moment you have to wear funny glasses that make it less usable. The glasses currently on the market have to flicker constantly to give each of your eyes a different image, which can be annoying and disorienting, and I have seen a report which says the 3D effect does not work if you sit more than a few feet away from the screen.

Remember these are the first generation of 3DTVs though, so the people who like to have the newest toys will buy these models, then the rest of us will wait for them to improve the technology and buy the later versions of them. There are one or two companies working on commercial applications of 3D viewing without having to wear glasses, so hopefully that will filter down into our TVs soon.

OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) are something to watch out for, but at the moment they are stuck with screens no bigger than about 13 inches in size. They are still trying to get round the problems of creating larger screens with this technology, but if they do crack it then you can expect to have a TV hanging on the wall which is mere millimeters thick! So the future of TV is certainly interesting, I can’t wait to see what things will be like in 5 years time…

If you are in the market for a new TV now then there is some new technology starting to emerge which you need to consider, and the sizes are still increasing too, both those things make it harder than ever to choose which model you should go for. One good thing I have noticed is that the plasma TV is a dying breed, the war between that and LCD is finally over, and LCD looks like it is the clear winner. You will see some plasma TVs still on the market, but LCD is firmly in control now so you need to think long and hard before you go against the popular opinion and get a plasma.

Below you will find two TV technologies you need to think about when you go shopping again:

3D TV is coming out: That’s right, 3D televisions are already on the market, and more will surely come flooding out now that others have made the tentative first steps, but are they any good? The big problem with anything 3D at the moment is the glasses that you have to wear if you want to experience it. The current ones use ‘active shutter’ technology which means each lens has a shutter on it that opens and closes faster than you can notice, so each eye receives a slightly different image. I think they are cumbersome, and wearing glasses ruins the experience, I wouldn’t mind wearing them to watch the odd 3D film, but watching normal TV in them? No thanks.

So I think it is best to wait for a few years before you get your first 3D TV, that way we can wait for the technology to move forward and see if they find a way to get rid of the glasses, or if we are stuck with them. Another good thing about waiting is that it gives them time to work out any bugs that emerge with this batch of TVs, and it gives the price time to go down as more TVs come out to create competition .

LED backlighting is available: Yes the TVs often referred to as LED TVs are out, when in fact they are LCD TVs with LED backlighting. This technology means they have taken the CCFL backlighting that is in every other LCD TV, and is a little bulky, and they have replaced it with ultra small and light LEDs instead. The end result is a TV with ultra slim sides and with its thickest point being just 2 inches, but is it worth paying more for that when LCD TVs are pretty slim already?

I think it is a good step forward, it makes them lighter and thinner, but I wouldn’t pay a massive premium for it like they are charging at the moment while the technology is still new and sparkly. Have a look in a year or so when the hype has died down, and if they are just 10% more than the non-LED range then they are probably worth getting, otherwise I would stick with a normal one.

Another thing you need to think about is the size, if you are stuck with a 32 LCD TV then you might want to consider upgrading to a 42 incher, but the 55 inch TV is too big for a normal family to enjoy comfortably.

Wireless Speaker Kits; will they end the cable clutter?

Recently more and more manufacturers have started to offer home theater systems with wireless speakers or a wireless speaker kit. From a homeowners standpoint, eliminating long speaker cable runs is certainly a big plus. Multi-channel surround sound is a fairly new phenomenon and as such many older houses are not wired for rear speakers, not to mention 7.1 systems. As such a wireless solution might be the logical conclusion. But how reliable are these wireless speaker kits in a real-world scenario and do these options really eliminate the dreaded cable clutter?

Some wireless speaker kits, such as the LG or Rocketfish allow to connect 2 speakers to a wireless receiver unit. This eliminates the cables from the front to the back. However, still cables need to be run from the receiver to each speaker and as such the amount of cables is just reduced but not eliminated. Another wireless surround sound product from Amphony comes with separate receivers for each speaker which in comparison to the other products does reduce the cable clutter, albeit not eliminate cables completely.

Will the wireless have any effect on performance? Audio quality is a main concern. In picking a wireless system, one should choose a system where (a) the transmission itself does not pick up any noise or degradation in order to maintain the audio quality and (b) the wireless amplifier itself should be a high-quality amplifier with minimal distortion. Also, the size of the wireless speaker amplifier is a consideration as the receiver should be invisible.

In a home theater setting, the sound from all surround speakers should be in sync with the video and each other. Some wireless speaker kits, such as the product from Rocketfish, will introduce a noticeable delay. As such you should look at how much of a delay or latency the wireless will introduce to the signal travelling to the wireless speakers. The product from Amphony introduces a delay of a little less than 1 ms which should be low enough for pretty much any application.

One of the main issues with wireless devices of any sort is interference from other devices. As more and more consumer devices go wireless, the available frequency space becomes more and more limited. Especially the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz bands are exceptionally crowded, due to WiFi hot spots, cell phones with Bluetooth etc. Picking a system that avoids these frequency bands may be the logical choice, such as systems working at 5.8 GHz.

Aside from using a wireless speaker kit in a home theater environment, another useful application for wireless systems is streaming audio between different rooms of the home where wiring would be difficult to install or for outdoor applications. Just imagine being able to set up your speakers in your backyard in a matter of minutes. The possibilities are endless.
